John Alvin Varnum, age 86, died on August 3, 2017. John was born on April 26, 1931 in Robeson County, North Carolina to John Washington and Nellie Almond Varnum. John retired as a Master Sargeant in the North Carolina National Guard. He will be missed by all who knew him.

John is survived by his wife Sarah "Lib" Varnum; two sons: Alvin Rodney Varnum and David Timothy Varnum (and his wife Lorri); daughter Monica Lynne Smith (and her husband Eric); five grandchildren: Virginia Kay Harris, Michael Varnum, Carlie Varnum, Jonathan Smith, and Matthew Smith; four great grandchildren: Nolan Harris, Landon Smith, Sydney Harris, and Bradley Harris; two sisters: Virginia Johnson and Helen Fuller; and one brother: James "Mac" Varnum.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, August 7, 2017 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, North Carolina. Burial will be held at 3:00 pm at Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 am prior to the service at Brown-Wynne.
