Colonel Irvin Robert Ellington, Jr. (ret) was born February 11th, 1939 in Belmont, NC to Irvin R. and Addie O. Ellington. He graduated from Belmont High School in 1957 and Appalachian State in 1961. He entered the US Air Force in 1962 and transferred to the Air National Guard in 1967 where he was employed until retirement as Deputy Chief of Staff in 1994. Irvin was awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and 14 other awards in addition to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine and two Freedoms Foundation Medals. After his retirement, he was actively involved with the Tarheel Challenge Academy, State Employees Credit Union, the NCDHHS Penalty Review Committee, and he enjoyed various part-time employment with Prestonwood Country Club, Enterprise Rental and Auto park Honda.

He was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a servant-hearted friend who looked for opportunities to help others and support their success.

Colonel Ellington is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anne Moore Ellington; daughter Lara Elizabeth and husband Stephen W. Brink; three grandchildren that he adored: Poppy Elizabeth (14), Levi Ellington (12) and Beatrice Anne (8); and brother Dr. Allen R. Ellington of Clemmons, NC. He is predeceased by sisters Kathleen F. Hargett of Orange, VA, Pat R. Haney of Denver, NC and Anne E. Cowan of Belmont, NC.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2:00 pm at Apex United Methodist Church, 100 S. Hughes St., Apex. Reception will follow on Buckingham Way.

Burial will be with full military honors at the Western North Carolina Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham, NC or to the Tarheel Challenge Academy in Salemburg, NC.
